64-Year-Old Man Sentenced for Seven Armed Bank Robberies

A Union County man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for committing seven armed bank robberies in 2011 and 2012.

Sixty-four-year-old Claude Williams of Elizabeth previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy, bank robbery and using a firearm during a crime.

Williams admitted he robbed the banks between September 2011 and July 2012. Six were in Middlesex and Somerset counties, and one was in Clifton in Passaic County.

He said he wore a bandanna, hooded sweatshirt or jacket and white gloves, and would vault the counter and demand money at gunpoint.

Police arrested Williams on July 30, 2012 after they'd observed him driving near a bank in North Plainfield on successive days.

Two women who admitted serving as getaway drivers for Williams already pleaded guilty and are serving prison sentences.
