Two people are in critical condition after the car they were riding in careened off of a New Jersey road and crashed into parked cars and a tree, authorities said.
The accident happened early Tuesday morning just before 2:30 a.m. as a 2010 Nissan Maxima was speeding south down Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.
A Hudson County Sheriff’s officer in a parked patrol car saw the Nissan careen out of control and cross into the northbound lanes.
The car then crashed onto a sidewalk before slamming into a tree and two parked cars, police said. A part of the tree then plummeted onto a third parked car.
The Nissan narrowly missed hitting the officer’s patrol car.
Photos from the scene show the crippled Nissan up against the two cars and tree, with much of its front end completely destroyed.
The driver and a front seat passenger in the Nissan were critically injured and had to be rescued from the wreckage by the Jersey City Fire Department.

They were rushed by first responders to the Jersey City Medical Center, where they remain in critical condition.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash.
