Museums, Zoos, Ice Rinks Open on Christmas

Shakespeare in the Park also comes indoors

Christmas Day isn't all about the presents and food, especially if you're in New York City where a great number of places are open for the day.The NewYorkology travel site pulled together a big list of places open on Christmas - and this year's offerings are substantial.

All the zoos are open, as are most of the outdoor ice skating rinks.

Central Park , which this year should be covered in white for Christmas Day, even offers the chance to ride the carousel, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Big Apple Circus will be performing, along with the Rockettes and a significant number of Broadway shows. Even the TKTS discount theater booth on Times Square will be open for a few days on December 25.

And while Christmas Eve mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral requires tickets, no reservations are required to attend the six celebrations of mass on Christmas Day.

In addition to the NY-traditional Chinese and a Movie -- this year with a Monty Python double feature -- you can also catch Shakespeare in the Park, but indoors. Film Forum will screen "Theater of War," which is a taped version of "Mother Courage" starring Meryl Streep from Central Park in 2006.
