Search Planned for Missing Mount Vernon Fire Victim

The three-alarm fire was reported just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire officials plan to return to the scene of a fire at a multifamily house in Mount Vernon to search for a 77-year-old woman who's missing and presumed dead.

The fire at the Second Street home broke out at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday on the first floor of the three-story structure. It spread to the upper two floors and continued to burn into the evening.

Fire officials tried to reach the second floor to search for the woman but the fire was too heavy, according to The Journal News. They plan to return Wednesday.

A 29-year-old man was treated for first-degree burns. The Red Cross is providing food, clothing and shelter to 16 adults and six children.

Six families lived in the building.

About 30 firefighters battled the blaze.
