A New York man has been accused of posing as a federal agent and conning undocumented immigrants out of cash by saying he could get them legal residency documents for a fee.

Marko Nikac was charged with grand larceny and criminal impersonation after one of the victims told a retired cop that the Congers man bilked them out of $3,000 each, according to police in Westchester County. The retired cop then told active-duty officers about the alleged con.

"It serves the entire Westchester County community well when criminals are apprehended, regardless of the immigration status of their victims," said Martin McGlynn, the acting commissioner of the Westchester County Police Department.

According to authorities, Nikac identified himself as a federal agent to the three me and told them he could get them green cards within three months in exchange for $9,000.

Once the men paid up, Nikac allegedly didn't make good on his offer. Police said when the victims asked for their money back, he threatened to have them deported before eventually giving back just $2,000.

Attorney information for Nikac, who turned 49 on the Fourth of July, wasn't immediately available.

The three-month investigation came amid a nationwide uproar over the Trump administration's immigration policies, including a "zero-tolerance" prosecution policy at the U.S.-Mexico border that separated some 3,000 kids from their parents.
