A 38-year-old mother who admitted smothering her 1-year-old child in the restroom of a Manhattan burger restaurant has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Latisha Fisher pleaded guilty last month to manslaughter in the March 2015 death of her son, Gavriel Fisher.

Authorities say Fisher was arrested after she was discovered by restaurant staff in the bathroom of 5 Boro Burger holding her son, who was foaming from the nose and turning blue. The mother had brought her son into the bathroom at the eatery; the two were locked inside for about 25 minutes before concerned customers contacted restaurant workers, who used a key to get in.

Fisher, who suffers from schizophrenia, told police the devil made her do it. She claimed she was protecting her son by putting him to sleep with her hand.

The father of the baby told News 4 at the time that "it's a nightmare" and that he was shocked Fisher could do that to their son.
