Another Round of Snow, Arctic Air Hits Tri-State

A wintry weather system dumped several inches of snow on parts of the tri-state ahead of another arctic blast that is set to freeze the region, possibly bringing the coldest temperatures of the season, Storm Team 4 says.

Snow Totals Across NY and NJ

Large flakes of powdery snow started falling over the area just after midnight Tuesday. Snowfall continued steadily through the morning commute, making travel slow on the roads and sidewalks, particularly south and east of the five boroughs. The snowfall tapered off before noon, but some residual flurries were expected into the afternoon. Temperatures Tuesday afternoon will warm into the upper 20s.

The snowstorm came on the heels of record-setting cold for parts of the region Monday morning. Central Park saw its lowest temperature in more than 11 years when the mercury hit 3 degrees early in the day, while JFK Airport, Islip and Bridgeport, Connecticut, all shattered record lows for Feb. 16.

Temperatures in the low single digits were observed throughout the tri-state, and the mercury dropped as much as 12 degrees below zero in parts of the upper Hudson Valley.

The frigid cold was accompanied by whipping winds that made uncovered skin numb in seconds and created the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Another light round of snow is expected to hit the region Wednesday, ahead of yet another arctic blast Thursday that could include gusty snow squalls, Storm Team 4 says. By Friday, temperatures could be the coldest of the season, with the mercury possibly plummeting close to 0 in the city.
