Girl, 7, Stable After Being Stabbed by Mom

Police say a 7-year-old girl who was stabbed several times by her suicidal mother at their Rockland County home has survived surgery and is in stable condition.

A Clarkstown police spokeswoman says investigators hope to talk to her about the tragedy but don't know when that will be.

Police say Ava Sangavaram and her mother, podiatrist Victoria Vovchik, were discovered Thursday by the girl's father, Dr. Kristappa Sangavaram. The mother killed herself.

The Rockland County medical examiner said Vovchik died from two self-inflicted wounds in her neck.

Sgt. Jo Anne Fratianni said the father, an anesthesiologist, called 911 at 1:09 p.m. She said no suicide note was found.

Vovchik and Sangavaram both practiced in New Jersey and co-owned their Rockland County home in New City. Police said there was no history of domestic dispute calls at the house.

"It's a shock and a horror to the whole community," said neighbor Marcy Becker.

Ava attends Woodglen Elementary School in New City. The school said grief counselors would be at the school on Friday.
