Body of Missing Connecticut Boater Found in Water

Mauro Godinez, 45, who didn't have a life jacket and cannot swim, was pulled underwater by a current

The body of a boater who went missing in Norwalk Harbor on Long Island Sound was found late Monday, near where he went under the water while out on a canoe trip with friends.

The Coast Guard says the man went missing at about 12:30 p.m. He was identified by friends as Mauro Godinez, 45.

Carlos Flores, one of the three other boaters who were rescued, says the group of friends from Norwalk took a tiny canoe out to go to Captain's Island on a fishing trip. About 15 minutes into the trip, the boat began taking on water and then capsized.

Godinez, who didn't have a life jacket and did not know how to swim, shouted "help me" three times before he was under water, pulled out further into the Long Island Sound by the current, according to Flores.

Two men had life jackets and were rescued. Flores was able to swim back to shore.

Martin Betts, a Coast Guard spokesman in New Haven, says an auxiliary aircraft initially searched for the missing boater, followed by a helicopter and boat.
