Racy Midtown Strip Club Holiday Display Stirs Controversy

A midtown strip club is getting in the holiday spirit with a racy window display.

The Vivid Cabaret –- a block from the department stores in Herald Square -– debuted a display Wednesday featuring a scantily-clad Miss Santa dancing in the store's front window.

Vivid’s regional manager, Shaun Kelvin, said that they decided to create a window display because the location -- at West 37th Street and Sixth Avenue -- is close to Macy's and other stores famous for their holiday decorations.

"We thought, 'Why don't we bring our own little spin on the holiday window thing?'", Kelvin said.

Kelvin said response to the display has been mostly positive. He said a lot of passersby do double-takes, and at least one fire truck rounded the block to get a second look.

"Everyone has a different idea of what they see in the holidays," Kelvin said. "This is just our interpretation of a holiday window."

Some pedestrians Wednesday laughed at the display while others stopped to take video of the scene. Wendy Matarazzo, of Manhattan, said she wasn't bothered by the tableau.

"I was a bit surprised, but I'm not that bothered by it," Matarazzo said. "I mean, it's New York."

Jihan Farghaly, of Long Island, said she thought it was a "a little obscene" and added that she would try to avoid the display the next time she was in the area with her son.

"I have a 2-year-old, I wouldn't want him seeing that," she said. "I don't want him to think that's what a woman does -- it's degrading, in a way."

Kelvin said the display will stay up through the holiday season with dancers periodically appearing in the window.
