Met Opera Extends Contracts 1 Week Amid Labor Dispute

The Met had said it would lock out workers at 12:01 a.m. Monday

The Metropolitan Opera and two of its unions have agreed to a one-week contract extension while an independent analyst studies the organization's finances.

The Met says the parties agreed to the review Saturday as a federal mediator worked to end a labor dispute threatening to shut down one of the world's most renowned cultural institutions.

The Met had said it would lock out workers at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

The one-week extensions apply to contracts with the American Guild of Musical Artists and the Associated Musicians of Greater New York.

Those unions represent the Met's singers and musicians.

The Met says discussions with 10 other unions with outstanding contracts are temporarily on hold. The organization reached new agreements with three unions earlier this week.

The Met says the financial review will be confidential.
