Five Hurt After Mercedes Fleeing Police Collides With Minivan: Cops

A car that committed a traffic violation in front of an unmarked police car sped off and collided with a minivan, sending both vehicles spinning out of control and sending nearly a half dozen people to the hospital in the Bronx, officials say.

The driver of a Mercedes made an unsafe turn without signaling at Conor Street and Boston Road in Pelham around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, according to authorities.

When an unmarked police officer tried to pull the car over, it sped off, police said. The officer did not continue to pursue the driver because the Mercedes began going eastbound in the westbound lane.

At the intersection of Boston Road and Ropes Avenue, the Mercedes collided with the minivan, officials said. The minivan ended up in the middle of the road while the Mercedes ended up in a nearby parking lot.

The Mercedes caught fire, and the FDNY quickly extinguished it.

Paramedics took four people to area hospitals, three were in the van and one was in the Mercedes.

Two people inside the van suffered serious shoulder and ankle injuries, police said. One suffered a minor injury. The passenger of the Mercedes suffered a serious leg injury. All are expected to survive, according to authorities.

The man who was driving the Mercedes suffered a minor injury and was taken into custody at the scene but he has not been charged, police said.
