Melania Trump Wears ‘I Really Don't Care, Do U?' Jacket Before Border Visit

Her spokeswoman said the jacket had no greater meaning; President Trump later tweeted that the jacket was a message to the "Fake News Media"

What to Know

  • Melania Trump wore a jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care, do u" before visiting migrant children in Texas
  • Her spokeswoman said the jacket had no greater meaning; President Trump later tweeted that the jacket was a message to the "Fake News Media"
  • The first lady's visit came a morning after President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending family separations at the border

First lady Melania Trump wore a jacket that read "I really don't care, do u?" as she boarded a flight Thursday to a facility housing migrant children.

The green, hooded military jacket had the words written graffiti-style on the back.

When asked what message the first lady's jacket intends to send, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said: "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe. "

Grisham underscored that message in a tweet with the hashtags #SheCares and #ItsJustAJacket.

Still, the jacket caused a stir on social media, with coverage of the first lady's jacket trending on Twitter Thursday afternoon.

Her husband, President Donald Trump, weighed in and contradicted Grisham's claim, saying the first lady's jacket was a message to members of the media.

""I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?” written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!," the president tweeted.

It also wasn't the first time Trump's wardrobe choices had social media users speculating that she was sending messages. She wore a white -- a reference to the women's suffrage movement  -- at the 2018 State of the Union address. And after the infamous "Access Hollywood" tapes were released just a month before the 2016 election, she made headlines by wearing a shirt with a pussy bow to a debate a few days later.

Trump changed into a pale yellow jacket before the plane landed in McAllen, Texas, for a visit to the Upbring New Hope Children's Center, which houses 55 migrant children.

The first lady had apparently changed into another jacket when the plane landed in McAllen, Texas, for the visit to the Upbring New Hope Children's Center, which houses 55 migrant children between 12 and 17 years old. Grisham said the visit was intended to lend support to children separated from their families since the Trump administration announced its "zero-tolerance" policy of prosecuting unauthorized border-crossers in May.

President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday that allowed families to be detained together while parents await prosecution.
