Business Leaders Bet on a Meadowlands Makeover

A casino, convention center, hotels, and an aquatics center considered

Business leaders want people to be able to place their bets in the swamps of Jersey.

The Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce on Monday unveiled a proposal for the future of the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Plans include a casino, convention center, six hotels, spa and an aquatics center.

The future of the Meadowlands racetrack and Izod Center are in doubt because Gov. Chris Christie has concentrated state efforts to bolster Atlantic City's casinos.

The Record newspaper reports Chamber President Jim Kirkos said there's no reason to postpone the future of the Meadowlands while Atlantic City works out its troubles.

The chamber estimates that a casino license could be worth at least $1 billion. Casino operators could be asked to build the convention center.
