A masked, hammer-wielding man beat a New Jersey gas station employee after demanding cash, surveillance video shows.

The robber went into the gas station in Wallington around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, the Lyndhurst Daily Voice reported.

After the man walked into the station, he knocked over an employee who was sitting in a chair, beat him and demanded cash, the video shows.

The employee recounted being thrown to the ground by the attacker in an interview with News 4.

“Whatever money I had, I [gave] him,” the employee said, noting that he pulled around $400 in cash from his pockets and handed it over.

The masked man, however, demanded more money and got increasingly aggressive, the employee recalled.

At one point during the robbery, the man tried to beat a back door open with the hammer.

The employee was treated at the hospital, but returned to work hours later.

He told News 4 he was shaken up by the robbery, but regretted letting the man get away. “I’m so sorry I [could not] control him,” he said. “I feel bad.”

Police are now searching for the suspect.
