Manhattan Resident Catches 2 Men Burglarizing Home on Security App Video

Even though he wasn’t home, a Manhattan resident caught two burglars robbing his apartment in real time.

Danny Wheeler, who lives on the Upper East Side, says he received an alert on his phone from home security app Canary around 1 p.m. on Monday letting him know activity had been detected at his apartment.

He opened the app and saw clear video of the break-in, which showed one suspect go into a bedroom and help the other suspect get in through a window.

Police say one suspect was able to get on the roof of the apartment building and used the fire escape to climb in through Wheeler’s window. He then held another window open for the second suspect.

Once inside, the first suspect took a silver bracelet from the bedroom dresser, police said. Wheeler said the men also took a Rangers ticket.

The men then took off, one of them using the fire escape again and the other leaving through the front door.

Seamus McDaid, who was working at the bar next door, said he saw the men climbing into the apartment.

“I said, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ and he just continued through the window,” McDaid said. “My first instinct was to intervene and then my better though told me don’t. If he was armed that would be a mistake.”

Wheeler said the motion sensor he had installed in his living room went off, sending the alert to his phone. While he was hesitant to get the motion sensor in the first place, he said he now thinks his money was well spent.

“Somebody knows who these guys are,” Wheeler said. “These guys have done this thing, let’s put an end to it.”

Police say one of the suspects was last seen wearing a blue Yankees baseball hat, a black hoodie with red writing and blue jeans, while the other was last seen wearing khaki cargo pants, a tan baseball hat and a green and white plaid shirt. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
