Man and Son Killed as Car Slams into Tombstones

A man and his son were killed Saturday when their car skidded off a highway and crashed into several headstones in a Long Island cemetery, police said.

Ravi Maharaj, 44, of North Amityville, and his 11-year-old son, Lochan, were killed in the 4 p.m. accident inside St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale, Suffolk County police said.

Maharaj was driving a 1995 Nissan Maxima on New Highway, about one mile south of Conklin Avenue, when he apparently lost control of the car and struck a fence and several headstones in the cemetery, investigators said.

Maharaj was pronounced dead at the scene. His son was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bethpage where he was pronounced dead.
