The girl was walking into her building at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when a man approached her from behind, covered her mouth and restrained her while putting his hand down her pants, police said.
The girl began to scream, prompting the suspect to run away.
The girl was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated and released.
The suspect is described as being about 5 feet 9 inches and 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark-fitted baseball cap, gray hooded sweatshirt, red T-shirt, ripped light jeans and gray sneakers.
