Man Treading Water in Bay Uses Cellphone to Call Rescuers

The man was taken to an area hospital for observation

A man whose personal watercraft started taking on water in the bay between New York City's Staten Island and New Jersey was rescued after using his cell phone to call for help, police said Friday.

The 21-year-old man was treading water at about 5 p.m. off the coast of Keansburg, New Jersey, in Raritan Bay when he made the call.

The U.S. Coast Guard asked the NYPD to help locate the man and a police helicopter crew spotted him.

Another NYPD chopper soon arrived and sent two divers into the water to help the man get hoisted to the aircraft.

The man was taken to an area hospital for observation, but police said he appeared to be unharmed.
