Man Threatened to Shoot Churchgoers on Easter Sunday on Long Island: Police

A man threatened to shoot a church full of worshipers on Easter Sunday on Long Island, police say.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., a man walked up to a man he knows at Iglesia Despertar Church in Baldwin, put his fist to the man’s face and said he was going to kill him, according to authorities.

The suspect, identified as Jose Rodriquez, 50, then pointed to his pocket and said he had a gun and he was going to come back to shoot other churchgoers, police said.

Rodriguez then ran away from the church before officials found him a short time later and arrested him, authorities said.

No weapon was recovered, police said.

Rodriguez is charged with third-degree menacing, disruption of a religious service and making a terroristic threat, according to police.

He is due in court Monday.

It was not immediately clear if Rodriguez has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
