Reason for attack remains unclear

A man brutally stabbed his mother to death and slashed his father before running to a subway station and leaping in front of a train, sources tell NBCNewYork.

The man, likely in his 20s or 30s, committed the heinous act at 21 Howard Place at about 8 a.m, authorities said.

Both wounded parents were rushed to Methodist Hospital, but the suspect's mother, who was stabbed in the eye and abdomen, did not survive. His father, stabbed twice in the throat, is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital, sources told NBCNewYork.

The suspect who jumped in front of the northbound G train was taken to Lutheran Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition.

It wasn't immediately clear why the man, who hasn't been identified, attacked his parents.
