Man Slashed Friend With Knife to Stop Him From Driving Drunk: Prosecutors

Aggravated assault charges have been filed against a northern New Jersey man who allegedly slashed a friend who tried to stop him from driving because he feared the man was drunk.

The Jersey Journal reports that Alejandro Garcia of Butler also faces weapons charges stemming from the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday during a house party at a Union City residence.

The victim, identified only as a 30-year-old North Bergen resident, suffered a laceration across his stomach that needed nine stitches to close.

Witnesses say the 27-year-old Garcia used a folding knife to slash the victim. They described the pair as "good friends."

It was not known Tuesday if Garcia has retained an attorney.
