Man Shot to Death After Going to NYC Park to Play Basketball: Family

Authorities are looking for the gunman who killed a partially paralyzed man whose family said left home to play basketball at a Bronx park before being shot in the head.

Yunior Manon, 21, was shot and killed at Morton Playground in Morris Heights on Tuesday evening, according to the NYPD. His parents said that Manon didn’t have any enemies and might have been caught up in some sort of gang violence.

“He was an angel that God took from me,” his mother said, speaking in Spanish.

Authorities said that Manon was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head near a basketball court at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said that while there were witnesses to the crime, no security cameras captured the shooting.

Manon has no criminal record, authorities said.

The man’s 18-year-old brother said that Manon loved basketball and often played even though he was partially paralyzed on his right side.

“He was a good kid, a powerful kid,” said Jason Manon.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Anyone with information on the killing should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
