Man Shoots Girlfriend in Head, Claims Robbers Did It: DA

A 30-year-old man shot his girlfriend in the head, threw the gun in a sewer and then took her to the hospital and told police she was shot by masked robbers, the district attorney said Monday.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Steven Diaz shot his 22-year-old girlfriend, Amanda Rivera, with a 9 mm handgun early Sunday morning at the Kew Gardens apartment they shared.

He then took her to Jamaica Hospital and claimed three masked robbers had broken into their home and shot her, the DA said.

Police found more than 10 pounds of marijuana in the home, according to the DA.

Rivera is in critical condition.

Diaz is charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, marijuana possession and other charges.

The DA said it did not have any information about a defense lawyer.
