Man Posing as Cabbie Charged with Rape: Police

A Long Island man posing as a taxi driver lured a 22-year-old woman into his car early Saturday and sexually assaulted her, police said.

Adil Raja, 22, of Central Islip, offered a ride to the woman, who was walking at the corner of Bay Avenue and Main Street in Patchogue at about 4 a.m., according to Suffolk County police. The woman accepted the offer and asked to be dropped off near a store in town.

Raja instead took the woman to different location, brandished a BB gun and assaulted her in the car's back seat, investigators said. The woman was eventually allowed to leave the vehicle and Raja drove away, police said.

The woman called 911 and a patrol officer soon spotted the car and pulled it over, police said.

Raja was being held for a Sunday arraignment on a charge of first-degree rape. There was no information indicating he had retained a lawyer who could comment on the charge.
