Man Makes 1,000 Trips Without Paying Toll: PA

Authorities have hit a Staten Island man with nearly $25,000 in fees for allegedly crossing toll bridges nearly 1,000 times without paying.

The Port Authority says Alfred Buono made 998 trips between March 2003 and May 23 of this year, and did not pay his E-ZPass bill, according to the Staten Island Advance.

The Port Authority filed papers in state Supreme Court, the paper said.

The Port Authority has several hundred lawsuits pending against people who don't pay tolls, spokesman Steve Coleman said.

"We take the issue of toll evasion very seriously and continue to take appropriate steps to recover the money that is owed to us," Coleman told the paper.

Coleman said cameras photograph vehicles when drivers with lapsed or expired E-ZPasses go through the crossings.

The paper said a woman who answered the door at Buono's last known address said he doesn't live there anymore. His telephone listing could not be located, the paper said.
