Car Slams Into Apartment; Man Dies, Girlfriend Hurt

Three kids were sleeping on other side of brick wall

Police are investigating a traffic accident in Rockland County, not only because a man was killed, but because his car crashed into a home and injured three young siblings.

The accident happened Wednesday in Haverstraw.

Rafael Pascual Jr., 21, was pronounced dead Thursday at Nyack Hospital. His girlfriend, Bianca Griffin, 18, had just come home from college for the winter break. She's listed in critical condition at Westchester Medical Center.

Edwin Ramos and his two siblings were asleep on the other side of the brick wall when Pascual's car crashed right through it.

"I got a bang on my head and I got a bump," Ramos said. He and his siblings fortunately suffered just minor injuries.

Investigators said the car jumped the curb, smashed through the wall and severed a gas main which could have caused an explosion. Firefighters who extricated the victims from the car said the speedometer was stuck at 85 mph.

"It's horrible," said Kaylyn Martucci, the victim's cousin. "I was hysterical. I was in the hosptial this morning before I went to work, because I happen to work at Nyack, so I went to visit Ralfie before I started work and then that's when he passed way. And then after I got out of work, I went up to sit with his famiy and say goodbye to him. It was horrible."
