A 64-year-old man was taken to the hospital with a serious arm injury after being hit by an MTA bus on the Lower East Side Monday, fire officials say.
Authorities say the M22 bus hit the man as it turned left at Madison and Jackson streets around 11 a.m. Surveillance video shows the man, using a walking cane, step into the crosswalk on Jackson Street as the light changes, giving him the right away. Moments later, he is hit by the bus.
Jennifer Torres' son called her in a panic.
"He said, 'Oh my God, Mommy, someone got hit by a bus. I can't believe it. I'm looking out the window,'" Torres said.
Chopper 4 captured an extensive emergency presence at the scene, as more than half a dozen firefighters and emergency officials crowded around the front wheel of the bus on the driver's side.
It wasn't clear if the man had been trying to cross the street when he was hit. His condition wasn't known. Caution tape cordoned off the area as authorities investigated.
The MTA confirmed the accident but did not comment further.
Monday's accident marks at least the third time this month an MTA bus hit a pedestrian. Early this month, a 59-year-old woman in the crosswalk was struck and killed by an MTA bus in Queens. The driver remained at the scene and no charges were filed.
Two days later, another MTA bus hit and killed a 70-year-old woman as she tried to cross a street in Brooklyn. That bus, which was not in service at the time, drove off after hitting the woman, leaving her body in the middle of the road. The MTA driver in that case been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony, failure to yield and other traffic offenses.
