Worker Gets Stuck in Manhole on Long Island

A Massapequa water district employee got stuck in a four-foot deep manhole while changing water meters on Thursday, prompting a large emergency response that included the use of special apparatus and equipment.

The worker was changing meters in the manhole on Front Street in front of a restaurant when he got stuck, according to water district officials.

His partner called for help, and police and several fire departments responded.

It took about an hour to extricate the man from the manhole, a process that included cutting away one of the lower rings inside the manhole, according to officials.

The worker was taken to the hospital to be checked out, and is OK, the water district said.
