A man emerged covered in brown muck after crews rescued him from a 24-inch Long Island storm drain he somehow ended up down Wednesday, authorities say.
Malverne Fire Chief James Lang said the man didn't fall down the drain at Corona Avenue in Valley Stream, but Lang didn't know how or why he ended up down there.
A passerby heard the man's screams for help and called 911, according to Lang.
Rescuers helped free the man from the sediment in the drain after about 20 minutes, and the man was able to hoist himself from the small circular hole in the ground using the ladder emergency crews had put down. He walked to a stretcher, where crews put a towel around his shoulders and checked his vitals.
Authorities then walked the man to the side of the road, where firefighters hosed him down. He appeared to be OK.
