Man With Child in Car Charged With DWI After Accident

The 4-year-old child in the car was not hurt

A Long Island man faces DWI charges after he hit a guardrail on the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway Wednesday evening, police say.

Daryl Veit, 42, had a 4-year-old child in the car at the time and faces additional penalties under Leandra's Law, named for an 11-year-old girl killed by an alleged drunk driver on the Henry Hudson Parkway in October 2009. Under Leandra's Law, driving drunk with anyone younger than 15 in the car is an automatic felony.

The child in Veit's vehicle was not hurt in the accident. He was released to his mother.

Veit was treated at a local hospital for minor back pain, police said.

He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated under the Leandra Law as well as DWI. Information on his attorney wasn't immediately available.

Veit is scheduled to be arraigned later Thursday in Hempstead.
