Man Charged in Grandparent Arrest Scam on Long Island: Police

Police have arrested a Long Island man they say stole money from an elderly man by telling him he needed it to bail his granddaughter out from jail.

Emanuel Jean Gilles, 31, told the 74-year-old victim in July that his granddaughter had been arrested and that he needed money to get her out in July, police said.

The elderly man transferred an unknown amount of money to the man’s bank account, but later found out that his granddaughter hadn’t been arrested, so he contacted police.

Gilles, who was found while being arraigned on an unrelated charged, was charged with third-degree grand larceny. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a similar crime by this man is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
