Man, 2 Teens Charged in Armed Robbery of Plainclothes Officer: NYPD

Police say a 20-year-old man who was shot by a plainclothes NYPD detective was stealing the officer's cellphone in an armed robbery in Brooklyn.

Altron Atwater, 20, and two teen accomplices were charged early Tuesday morning in connection with the Sunday robbery, the NYPD said.

The three suspects approached one of three plainclothes detectives around 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Monroe Street and Bedford Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Atwater allegedly took out a gun, which was later identified as a BB gun, and took the detectives cellphone. The officer then took out his gun and shot Atwater, striking him in the right arm and torso.

Atwater was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.

A 16-year-old was taken into police custody at the scene and a 15-year-old who initially fled was later apprehended.

Atwater and the two teens were charged with armed robbery, grand larceny, petit larceny, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment. It wasn't clear if they had attorneys.

The detectives were in the neighborhood investigating a scam in which victims were being lured there by a Craigslist ad for rental apartments and then robbed. It wasn't clear if the suspects were connected to the Craigslist scam.
