Authorities say a New York mother has been arrested for attacking two police officers trying to help her severely injured child who later died.

Cynthia Arce was arrested Tuesday at the Westchester County Medical Center where she was being treated for a gunshot wound. She was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a police officer. Information on her lawyer wasn't immediately available.

The 28-year-old mother was shot by police who had responded to her home in Mamaroneck on Saturday. Police say she attacked two officers with a knife after they found the injured toddler.

Police say officers used a stun gun to no avail before shooting the woman.

The toddler was taken to a hospital where she died. Autopsy results are pending.

In response to the claims of the father's attorney that the girl was supposed to be removed from Arce's care the day before, the police department reiterated the prosecutor's characterization of the custody issue as a civil matter.
