Madoff Case Spawns Cottage Industry

The Bernard Madoff scandal has spawned a cottage industry of talking heads, expert panels and Internet traffic devoted to the case.
    
On Thursday alone, burned investors -- and others transfixed by what's called the largest Ponzi scheme in history -- could choose between separate Madoff breakfast panels in Manhattan.
    
They also could dial up a teleconference about the “myths and realities'' of the case.
    
One breakfast, billed as “Madoff and The Meltdown,'' was hosted at the 21 Club. It featured celebrated Holocaust survivor and writer Elie Wiesel, whose charitable foundation lost $15.2 million. Wiesel called Madoff “a crook, a thief, a scoundrel.''
    
Madoff was arrested in December after authorities said he confessed to a $50 billion Ponzi scheme. He remains under house arrest.
