An off-duty MTA supervisor was shot on a packed, rush-hour subway train Tuesday evening, and the suspect, possibly a teenager, is still being sought, police say.
The hydraulic supervisor, later identified by law enforcement sources as Carlos Thorne, was on the southbound 3 train when the supervisor, who was just leaving work and was on his way home, was grazed in the arm at the Sutter Avenue-Rutland Road station in Brownsville, police said.
He was taken to Kings County Hospital. Police said he was an innocent bystander.
Cops swarmed the train just after 6:30 p.m. after the gunfire rang out. Officials said two groups of young men were fighting as the southbound train roared into the station. It spilled out onto the platform, where one man opened fire, investigators said.
Police said the shooter fled, but they were able to detain three men involved in the feud. They were questioned, however, cops said they were not arrested. Police tell News 4 that the shooter may be 15 or 16 years old wearing a blue shirt and dark-colored pants.
MTA President Andy Byford and Chairman Joe Lhota visited the worker at the hospital Tuesday, and said in a statement he was in "very good spirits," according to Byford.
"This is a horrible incident and we're all pulling for a speedy recovery. Transit workers are on the front lines of moving millions of New Yorkers every day and this shouldn't happen to anyone," Lhota added.
