MTA Mulls Options for 2015 Fare Hike

New York City commuters can expect to pay more to use public transportation next year.

MTA Chairman and CEO Tom Prendergast said the plan is to increase subway and bus fares by 4 percent beginning in March.

Sources within the transit agency tell NBC 4 New York the MTA is considering keeping the base fare the same and lowering the discount for multiple rides or raising base fares by 25 cents and increasing or maintaining MetroCard bonuses. The increase for tolls is yet to be determined.

More details are expected to emerge in the next week.

Public hearings will be held in December and the board will vote on the fare hike proposal in December or January, transit sources said.

In 2013, the city announced a plan to increase fares several times over the next four years, with the first hike coming in 2015 and another expected in 2017.
