MTA Approves Additional Funds for Second Avenue Subway

The MTA will tap into a back-up fund for an additional $66 million in order to finish the Second Avenue Subway on time.

The MTA board voted to approve the additional funds, which will allow contractors more shifts and overtime while they work to install escalators and elevators and finish power distribution rooms at the new stations.

At the board meeting Wednesday, MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast said that the line should be on track to open by December.

The contractors will have to finish their work by set dates, which have not been determined, in order to receive payment.

The additional money will allow pre-revenue testing on the new line to begin by September and full service to begin by December.

The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway will link 63rd Street and 96th Street on the Upper East Side, the MTA said.
