Train speeds have more than doubled on some MTA lines since last summer, but many commuter lines are still running slower than they could be.
In a press release Monday, the MTA reported that the agency has implemented speed limit increases at 24 out of 68 approved locations as part of its Save Safe Seconds campaign. It has also identified a whopping 320 “inaccurate” timer signals and has fixed 59 of them.
“If [a timer signal] is inaccurate then it trips the emergency break at a lower speed,” said Shams Tarek, a spokesperson for the MTA. “We’re fixing signals so that the train can go at the speed they’re actually permitted to go.”
The R train at the City Hall location is one of the lines that has already received improvement—the speed limit has doubled from 6 miles per hour to 15, according to the release.
“I have directed my team to identify and resolve every root cause of delay; in doing so, we can then implement the right fix, often for little or no cost,” said NYC Transit President Andy Byford. “I look forward to announcing additional improvements soon and commend all of our workers who are doing their part each and every day to ‘Save Safe Seconds’ for our customers.”
