LI Woman Riding in Car Is Hit by Stray Shot in NJ

The 20-year-old woman was in the vehicle with some friends when they heard gunfire

A Long Island woman headed to a party in northern New Jersey was critically wounded when a stray bullet apparently entered the car she was riding in and struck her.

Paterson police tell The Record that the 20-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was in the vehicle with some friends when they heard gunfire. She then told her friends that she had been shot.

The group, which had been looking for a site in Paterson where the party was being held, initially drove to a nearby complex that they thought was a hospital. But they soon realized their mistake and called 911.

Authorities said the woman was hospitalized in critical condition, but further details on her condition and the shooting were not disclosed.
