A village in Long Island has agreed to pay $25,000 to New York City in a settlement for hiring one of its police officers.
Officer Patrick Kelly resigned from the NYPD in January 2012, two weeks after graduating from the police academy. He was then hired to work for the Lynbrook Police Department.
Lynbrook Mayor William Hendrick tells Newsday that it appears the NYPD requires two years on the job to prevent them from seeking compensation for their officer going to another municipality.
The city filed court action against the Village of Lynbrook in 2013, citing a law that requires reimbursement to the city for police training expenses.
The Nassau State Supreme Court had sided with the village, but the Appellate Division reversed the ruling in June.
