Long Island Police Chief Cleared in Probe, Lawyer Says

Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke was told last month that the FBI had closed its investigation, according to his lawyer

The attorney for a Long Island police chief says his client has been told that a federal investigation of his client has been closed.

Joseph Conway said Wednesday that Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke was told last month that the FBI had closed its investigation.

A man suspected of breaking into vehicles claimed that Burke had confronted him in a precinct interview room after his arrest on charges he stole items from the chief's SUV.

Burke has not commented. His attorney says Burke is pleased the investigation has been closed.

Conway said that a special prosecutor assigned to the theft case filed court papers Wednesday confirming the federal investigation into Burke's actions was closed.

The FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office had no comment.
