Package theft is already a well-known problem during the holiday season, but on Long Island, a thief isn't just stealing packages -- he's re-gifting unwanted items.

Nassau County police say that residents have been opening boxes, expecting to find things they've ordered, only to find old clothes, shoes and garbage.

The thief has pulled off the con in Malverne, Valley Stream, Elmont and Rockville Centre, police say.

The reason he's doing it, police say, is that it makes him look like a deliveryman, simply dropping off or picking up packages.

Malverne residents, who received a text alert about the thief, say the thief's unusual tactic is more likely to work this time of year, when it's not just well-known trucks making deliveries.

The suspect loads the stolen packages into a white Chevy van. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
