Man Who Mowed Down Long Island Officers in Hit-Run to Be Sentenced

A Long Island man will be sentenced to 25 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to running down two Suffolk County police officers with a stolen SUV last year, prosecutors said.

Chad Moriszan, 34, was driving a stolen SUV on September 22 on Partridge Lane in Huntington when he was stopped by officers Nicholas Guerrero and Heriberto Lugo.

He suddenly put the car into gear and fled as the officers approached him, running into both men. As he sped off, he hit another car at a nearby gas station and he and passenger Nicholas Franzone abandoned the Ford Explorer and carjacked a Toyota Camry from a Commack driveway, stealing the 87-year-old owner’s credit cards in the process.

The two were arrested hours later when they tried to buy a television with the stolen cards.

Guerrero sustained severe head injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma. He was released from the hospital a month later, after undergoing surgery and physical therapy.

Moriszan pleaded guilty to assault in the first degree, assault on a police officer, leaving the scene, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, robbery in the second degree and forgery.

Franzone will return to court on August 4. It was not clear if he had an attorney.
