Stormy Weather Causes Closure of 19 LI Beaches

The closings were called a precautionary measure because storm water runoff can affect the quality of bathing water

More than a dozen Long Island beaches have been closed on the first day of Memorial Day weekend because of bad weather, officials said.

The Nassau County Department of Health said 14 North Shore and five South Shore beaches are closed on Saturday because storm water runoff can elevate bacterial levels in bathing water.

The closings were referred to as a precautionary measure.
