More than a dozen Long Island beaches have been closed on the first day of Memorial Day weekend because of bad weather, officials said.
The Nassau County Department of Health said 14 North Shore and five South Shore beaches are closed on Saturday because storm water runoff can elevate bacterial levels in bathing water.
The closings were referred to as a precautionary measure.
