Long Island Mom Arrested in DWI Hit-Run With Son in Car: Police
    Erin Kelly Scheppy

A Long Island mother driving with her 10-year-old son in the vehicle was arrested Friday after she crashed her vehicle in what police say was a drunken hit-and-run on a busy highway.

The 45-year-old East Northport woman was driving a Honda on the Northern State Parkway near Meadowbrook Parkway in Lake Success shortly after 5 p.m. when she allegedly struck a white van and fled the scene, state police say.

Troopers caught up with the woman a short distance away and while talking to her, suspected she was intoxicated, police said. She failed sobriety tests and was arrested on the scene.

Because her young son was in the car, Erin Kelly Scheppy was charged with aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, child endangerment and other traffic violations.

Scheppy was being held in Nassau County First District Court pending arraignment. It's not clear if she has an attorney.

Her son was released to the custody of a relative.

Leandra's Law is named in honor of Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old girl killed while she rode in a car with the intoxciated mother of one of her friends. Signed into law in November 2009, it strengthened penalties against DWI drivers.
