2 Grew Pot in Long Island Sump Basin: Police

Long Island authorities have arrested a suspect they say cultivated a 100-plant marijuana farm at a town sump basin.

Suffolk County police are continuing to look for the suspect's accomplice.

According to Newsday, police say Mark Kern of Smithtown was arrested Wednesday as the two men arrived at a secluded Commack recharge basin.

Kern was arraigned Thursday on charges of criminal possession of marijuana, criminal trespass and resisting arrest. He pleaded not guilty. He's been released after posting $5,000 cash or $15,000 bond bail.

His lawyer called his client "a good man" who had nothing to do with the allegations.

Authorities say the suspects accessed the basin through holes cut in the fence. The plants were 7-to-10 feet tall.
