A Long Island man led police on a car chase after they tried to arrest him for stealing a woman’s phone, authorities said.
Daniel Heckman, 30, of Holbrook, allegedly stole a 25-year-old woman’s phone in Hicksville on Jan. 4 after violating an order requiring him to stay away from her, Nassau County police said.
When police arrived at Heckman’s home to arrest him on Monday, Heckman got into a Nissan Maxima and hit the gas, forcing one of the officers to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit, police said.
Heckman then allegedly backed out of his driveway erratically and drove off, according to police.
Officers followed Heckman and tried to get him to pull over on North Service Road, police said. Instead, he got on the Long Island Expressway and started driving erratically, according to police.
At some point during the pursuit, Heckman turned around and drove back to his home, where he refused to get out of his car, police said.

He was arrested after a brief struggle, according to police.
Heckman has been charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, petit larceny and criminal contempt, in addition to several vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.
His attorney information wasn’t immediately available.
