Long Island Volunteer Firefighter Charged With Arson

A volunteer firefighter is free on $7,500 bail following his arrest on arson charges for allegedly setting fire to a historic Long Island house.

Nassau County police say 20-year-old Christopher Zaino, of Bayville, was arrested Thursday. He was charged with arson in the Oyster Bay fire on March 22.

Authorities say the vacant Mill Pond House was owned by the town of Oyster Bay. The 335-year-old house was vacant at the time of the fire. A town spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Defense lawyer Charles McQuair said his client is a respectable young man with no criminal history.

A message left with the chief of the Bayville Fire Department, where Zaino worked as a volunteer, was not immediately returned.
