Elderly Man Killed, Wife Hurt in Fire at Home Full of Hoarded Debris

An elderly man was killed and a woman was critically hurt in a fire at their home stuffed with debris on Long Island Tuesday, officials said.

Officials said a passerby reported the fire on Park Lane Drive in Albertson before 11 a.m., but it had already been burning for some time.

Firefighters found the couple near the front door of the house, but went back in to search for more people.

Assistant Fire Chief Joel Melamed said the house was so stuffed with boxes and junk that it was hard for firefighters to move around.

The couple both had burns and smoke inhalation injuries; the man later died.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
